The 2022 Come Follow Me studies will cover the Old Testament and all of the familiar stories that come with it. Studying it as a community of Latter-day Saints is sure to bring deeper insights and we wanted to start off with viewing the Old Testament through the eyes of an artist. 

Some of our more well-known pieces tend to be scenes from the Book of Mormon or favorite miracles recorded in the New Testament. However, many of our artists have captured biblical scenes such as the creation story, David and Goliath, Noah, and others. We hope these works of art bring inspiration and insight to you as we start a new year and for many months to come.

The story of God creating the world contains many layers. Even in the Bible itself, the language is poetic and full of symbolism. It is such a simple and yet such a complex story that people from all walks of life may bring a different perspective to the table. So what better form to capture such a beautiful account than art?

Throughout the Old Testament portion of the Bible, God calls people to His work. The tasks He requires are never easy and, in many cases, do not even make a lot of logical sense. For example, how was a small boy, too young to be brought into battle, supposed to beat a giant champion such as Goliath? Or how was it possible that an entire sea was divided so that a nation of people could cross? 

These stories make it clear that, in many cases, God’s ways are not ours. Yet, if we trust Him, He will prove to us that He is not only real but that He loves and cares for us.

Like all religious or even literary writings, the Bible is full of important meaning and symbolism. It invites us to pause and ponder on what we are studying. It invites us gain a deeper understanding of God and our savior Jesus Christ. Of course, we live many years after the time of the Bible and in an entirely different culture, which can make some stories difficult to understand. With a new year comes new opportunities for learning and growth. Many of us have faced challenges and losses in the past couple of years, but God’s word consistently reminds us that there will always be hope. Jesus Christ came as proof that we are not alone. God is with us, especially when we choose to lift and help each other.
